As a branch of Arts and Crafts, handmade carpet industry is expanding and making considerable progress in Greece. Skilful hands in remote mountain villages are engaged in tying those peculiar knots which, congenially set out in horizontal lines against upright warps, make up the thousand and one variations in the designs and shades of the carpet. The characteristic feature of the designing process is an inherited aesthetic sense deriving from the rich sources of Greek tradition; a knowledge of the texture and methods of handling of materials; and an ability to adapt to the needs of modern interior decoration. Suitable technique in execution and finish, combined with selected raw materials which have traditionally characterised Greek handmade knotted carpets, are the basis of their excellent quality. The Ministry of Industry supervises and watches the work of the Organization so as to promote the development of its activities. On the occasion of the Conference and the Exhibition of Arts and Crafts of European Economic Community Countries to be held at Thessaloniki from 30th May to 9th June, 1965, the Greek Carpet Organisation presents in this Publication some illustrations of Greek Handmade carpets.
